History of the Schaefer Family
Irish-American Agnes Magrane at age 6, and Joseph Schaefer at age 17, came to Kansas in 1878. His family emmigrated from Kamenka, Russia. They and many others were known as the "Volga Deutschers" or Volga Germans who lived along the River Volga in southern European Russia around and to the south of Saratov. They maintained their German traditions, culture and language and brought much of that to the midwest United States, including central Kansas.
